Interview With StudioYdesign In Victoria

British Columbia’s red-hot real estate market is always a popular topic of discussion, but all those gorgeous homes wouldn’t be quite so liveable if it weren’t for all the beautiful furnishings inside them. Here to talk with us about modern furniture and its central importance in any West Coast interior design plan is Amin Sunderji from the Victoria-based furniture boutique StudioYdesign!

LuxuryBC: Thanks for speaking with us, Amin. Can you please tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Amin Sunderji: I migrated to Canada in 1972 and got my first job at a furniture warehouse, which provided my introduction to the furniture business. My family and I first established our own store Yaletown Interiors in 1988, which was strongly positioned in the heart of Yaletown and which grew from there. We still have a store operated by our family in Coquitlam, BC. My son Alykhan joined the business sometime after his University education, following my path in the furniture business.

Managing four stores and a distribution center in Vancouver, Alykhan then decided to open up a store in Victoria, BC and wanted to do something quite different from what we were doing in Yaletown. With Alykhan’s eye for more modern and contemporary furnishings and with full confidence in Victoria, he opened up StudioYdesign on Herald Street. Alykhan has brought in amazing, clean lines of furniture from Europe to Victoria and the Island.

LuxuryBC: What are your thoughts on the design style here in Victoria BC?

Amin Sunderji: The design here in Victoria is still somewhat old-fashioned, which gave us the opportunity to break into a market where fashion-forward furniture was needed. We introduced modern and contemporary styles and it has been a huge success. There are lots of condos in Victoria, with more being built, and we think that our style and customizable pieces are perfect for condo living.

LuxuryBC: What brand are you really excited about and think fits in with homes here in Victoria?

Amin Sunderji: We are very excited about all of our brands in the showroom, as they all offer something different to Victoria and the Island. Some of our best lines are out of Europe and include Calligaris, Gamma International, and Eilersen. However, we also carry quality furniture from Canada with our lines from EQ3.

LuxuryBC: What makes your store different from the rest here?

Amin Sunderji: Our product has a lot more quality and functionality at great value. We make sure that we introduce all of the highest-quality frame construction, solid wood tables and beds. For example, tables with hidden mechanisms, sofas that turn into high-quality daybeds, and beds with either lift storage or drawer.

We carry a diverse range of furnishings which are perfect for all types of homes, from big houses to small condos, making sure our customers can utilize as much space as possible.

LuxuryBC: Where can we find you online and offline?

Amin Sunderji: I invite you to visit our Victoria showroom at 520 Herald St, or on our website at StudioYdesign.ca. You can also follow us on social media at facebook.com/StudioYdesignVictoria, pinterest.com/StudioYdesignVI, @StudioYVictoria on Twitter, and StudioYVictoria on Instagram.
