Good Eats at the Victoria Public Market

The Victoria Public Market at The Hudson is one of our weekend favourites when we are out and about in downtown Victoria for so many reasons. There is an amazing selection of products and tasty treats that it makes meal planning a breeze for more elaborate weekend meals.

We start at The French Oven to grab a couple of asiago brioche (and sample the amazing breads) for a snack and pair it with some local diablo salami from Ravenstone Artisan Meats. Whenever Victoria Pie Co. has mini mushroom cream and gruyere pies, I can never resist them for lunch!

For dinner, we decided to grab some local chorizo sausage from Ravenstone Farm, local brussel sprouts and shallots from The Grocer at the Hudson. The chorizo is so incredibly fresh and spicy and it reminds me of family dinners at my aunt’s.

To add some tart sweetness we picked up some strawberry dark balsamic vinegar (and a cute pink spout!) from Olive the Senses after trying a sip of each and every white and dark balsamic vinegar in store. I love the white balsamic vinegars here, but we chose to go with a dark balsamic for tonight because of its thickness and sweetness. I also couldn’t resist a cute pink vinegar spout.

Being cheese-lovers, we couldn’t help but snap up a wedge of parmesan from Salt Spring Island Cheese but again, not after sampling a little of each delicious cheese. I can barely describe the incredible harmony that is this salty parmesan with a drizzle the sweet and sour raspberry balsamic vinegar. There are also some tasty sweet and spicy chutneys to sample from that I will be using on my Christmas event cheese plates.

We couldn’t help but swing by the award-winning Island Spice Trade to check out their amazing sale on spices and salts, and picked up an incredible tuscano finishing salt plus little bags of other spices to grow seasoning collection.

Once we got home, we couldn’t wait to put all of our goodies from the Public Market together!

I threw together this super simple salad with a mix of baby kale and greens, rustic chunks of the parmesan, a drizzle each of olive oil and that incredible raspberry balsamic and finishing with some freshly cracked pepper and a pinch of tuscano finishing salt. I think this salad will make an appearance at our next dinner party. Amazing!!

For our main, we fried together the brussel sprouts, some shallots and three chorizo sausages with a splash each of wine and raspberry balsamic vinegar. The oil from the chorizo just does something amazing with the sprouts that I know this is something that we will need to repeat. We usually do our brussel sprouts with bacon, but I think the depth of flavour from the chorizo is just so much better.
